Hi! I teach Early Fives (PreK). I have been reading your book and I just read the section about “noticing.” I saw another preschool teacher use a "clip-up only" chart to provide some extrinsic motivation. What are your thoughts on using that in conjunction with the “I notice” statements?
One question I had is I’ve always used Class Dojo to give positive behavior points and I’ve had a class store as well to cash in their points for activities and prizes. Does any of this fit with Scott’s plan? I’ve never felt great about flooding the kids with prizes for expected behavior and it rarely works for the difficult students anyway, but where do the rewards stand according to Scott?
I am having a very difficult time with a student in my class. I have been through training and am even trained as a coach in my building and I'm still at a loss. I'm "noticing" like crazy, giving my best crazy eye, moving around the room, etc... the student came to me from kindergarten where he had an extensive "Behavioral sticker chart." Many of his behaviors are unsafe-- these are what I'm mostly having a hard time with. Climbing and standing on my rocking chair, leaving the room, trying to cut his finger with scissors, pushing a pencil into his forehead, etc. He has even talked loudly in class about killing, stabbing, and other dangerous and inappropriate things. I know he is just absolutely CRAVING attention and received tons of one-on-one adult attention last year with teachers and paraprofessionals. He figured out quickly that the only way to get attention and get removed from the room was to be unsafe-- everything else gets ignored.
