Topics in this episode include:

  1. I've read your book, and I have a question about student jobs. Is it a bad idea to make sure every student has some kind of job? I want each of them to have the opportunity to "prove" that they are responsible by keeping their job. Also, can some students have more than one job?

  2. I am struggling with my calm signal by itself being enough to stop me from raising my voice. I was successful for a while with it at school with my 4th graders. I alternate between “Oh dear” and “Oh boy” as my calm signals. Near the end of the year, my students were starting to mimic me and make fun of me using it. It infuriated me, but I was mostly able to remain calm. I’m just wondering if there’s anything else you do to help you not raise your voice. The calm signal doesn’t always work for me. I’m noticing the same thing at home with my teenagers. I would appreciate any advice.

  3. Why do my 4- and 6-year-old insist on being on their absolute worst behavior when we go to visit family? We live several hours away from most of our family members, so we don't have time to visit very often. When we go to my parents' or a cousin's house, I want to be able to enjoy the time with my relatives—but my kids make it impossible as they are just all over the place and don't listen to a word I say. I can't just take them home and try again the next day. What do I do?
